The start of a glorious career

With the new name DT began composing new origional material and in 1989 they released "When Dream And Day Unite" but after some shows they fired vocalist Charlie Dominici due to creative differenes. And again they had to struggle for 2 years to find another singer. This time it was Kevin James LaBrie of Canadian glam metal band "Winter Rose". After the completion of the band once again they released "Images And Words" on 1992 which brought the band their first taste of success and international recognition. Later in 1994 they released their third studio album "Awake" but shortly after the release Kevin Moore announced his departure from the band giving way for Derek Sherinian. Sherinian worked with the band on two of their next albums "A Change Of Seasons" and "Falling Into Infinity" relesed in 1995 and 1997 respectively.

But his services to the band discontinued as Jordan Rudess replaced him in 1999. Since then it has been completely uphill for the band.

History

The progressive metal gods, Dream Theater were formed in 1985 by three students of Berklee college of music under the name of "Majesty". Those three students were drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist John Petrucci and base guitarist John Myung. Then Kevin Moore, Petrucci's high school band-made filled in on keyboards and Chris Collins was recruited as lead vocalist. The band started off covering their idols Rush, Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche, Pink Floyd. Later in 1986, they recorded a collection of demos known as "The Majesty Demos" which sold 1000 copies within 6 months. But after the release of the demos, Chris Collins left the band due to musical differences. Then after a year of struggle, Charlie Dominici joined the group. After Charlie's recruitment the band started playing shows in and around New York city and gained some exposure. But soon after that a Las Vegas group also named as majesty threatened legal action for the use of their name. So the band had to change their name and named themselves as "Dream Theater" as suggested by Mike Portnoy's father.
